From September 2021 we are very excited to announce that we will be extending our partnership with Southampton Virtual School to support Looked After Children with Outdoor Learning sessions five days a week.
Southampton Virtual School have been utilising Youth Options’ Outdoor Learning Programmes since 2019 to support to those that have been placed in care. The children and young people involved, for whatever reason, have experienced turbulence, instability and change to their lives. This can leave them vulnerable, with complex emotional needs, or struggling in mainstream education.
By engaging young people with Outdoor Learning, we offer the opportunity to spend positive time engaging with nature and accessing support for the issues they are facing.
Each session encourages the children to build relationships, learn new skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem, and offers the opportunity to develop friendships with other children in similar situations to their own.
So far the partnership has been a huge success with young people making new friends, engaging at school, and contributing to positive mental wellbeing.
Maria Anderson, Headteacher at Southampton Virtual School said:
“Southampton Virtual School are delighted to be extending our partnership with Youth Options. Before, during and after the pandemic we have been able to rely on their provision. They are responsive to the needs of our children and adapt their provision so that it is child centred. No child has ever said they don’t want to go back – they are hooked from day one!”
Jamie Boyd, Outdoor Learning Manager for Youth Options said:
“We are delighted that Southampton Virtual School will be increasing their outdoor learning sessions from 3 days a week to 5 days, ensuring that looked after children in Southampton have access to sessions every day of the week.”
