For Rob and Mary, supporting their daughter Lucy had become incredibly challenging. Day-to-day life felt overwhelming, as Lucy’s needs began to affect every part of family life. Lucy has autism, and alongside this she experiences intense anxiety, which can make everyday situations feel unpredictable and difficult to manage, including attending school. By the time support began, she was only able to attend for short periods and was missing out on much of her education.
Rob joined our Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) course hoping to find ways to bring some calm and stability back into their home. Both he and Mary were very concerned and worried about Lucy’s future. They had been doing everything they could, but it often felt like they were facing it alone.
As we got to know the family, it became clear that they would benefit from more personalised support alongside the course. We worked closely with them, offering emotional support, practical guidance, and someone to stand alongside them during a very difficult time. We liaised with Lucy’s school to help create a more consistent and supportive plan, and made sure the family’s voice was heard in important conversations about her care.
We also supported the family through the process of applying for additional educational support, helping them navigate what can often feel like a complicated and overwhelming system. At the same time, we worked with other services to make sure Lucy could access the specialist help she needed.
Through regular contact and time spent together at home, we helped Rob and Mary adapt the NVR strategies in a way that worked for their family. Having that consistent support made a real difference, especially during the tougher moments, and helped them begin to rebuild their confidence.
Over time, things began to change. While challenges didn’t disappear overnight, Rob and Mary felt more able to understand and respond to Lucy’s needs. Home life became more manageable, and they started to feel more in control again.
One of the biggest shifts was something many families take for granted. They were able to spend time together outside the house again, attending events and enjoying simple outings that had once felt impossible. These moments helped them reconnect and create positive memories as a family.
“I just want to say Mary and I really appreciate all the help you have given us, you don’t realise how much you have change this entire situation for us as I feel we both feel empowered to move forward with our new way of life with Lucy.”
